“The Cyclopean Towers”
“The natural chimneys have aroused imaginations for two centuries. Artists, poets and gentlemen of the romantic era have added to the strangeness of this natural wonder by giving the chimneys poetic names like “Vulcan’s Forge” or by likening them to Greek and medieval architecture. For a time, the name “Cyclopean towers” was applied to the chimneys, but this was later dropped in favor or “Natural Chimneys”, which was in common local usage.”
Photographer’s Note: On January 29, 2021, I felt a need to get out of the house and see the snow. Was going a bit stir crazy as whenever I worked for the News Leader, I was always the one to go out to find the snow pictures.
But as freelancer, I’m photographing for myself and so wanted to see something in snow that I’d never seen before. … And the Natural Chimneys was on that list.
So turned the car to Mount Solon and went out to see what this natural wonder looks like in the snow.
It’s definitely a place I plan to revisit again for a future snow, bringing along my super-telephoto lens next time for closer shots focused in on what’s up on the tops of the spires.
